But the main thing is, Tootie, that we're all going to be together, just like we've always been.
Meet Me in St. Loius kills me EVERY TIME. I love it so.
I am especially the hugest sucker for the part when the family has been quarreling about the impending move to New York and Papa and Mama wander into the living room and she plays the piano and he goes, "You haven't played that one in years" and starts singing along in much too high a pitch, "You and I, together forever..." and she goes, "I'll put in down in your key," and then they sing together a song that WRENCHES my heart..."Time goes by, but we'll be together...you and I." And all the family slowly and peacefully drifts back downstairs to share cake and listen.
This movie is FILLED with moments that follow me daily in the the dreams of my waking life. Cause I've watched it way too many times over the years.
"If you like-a me and I like-a you and we like-a both the same..."
"Oh John, I don't hate you. I just hate BASKETBALL." (that's one I've used on Darin a few times)
"Oh Mr. NEEEEELLYYYY"
"here comes the old maid now..."
"I just adore him, so I can't ignore him...the boy next door."
It's not exactly a Christmas movie but I think it counts because most of the major actions happens during the holidays.
Especially, best of all, the Christmas dance and my DREAM DRESS:
And of course, the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," written for the movie and sung so heart-wrenchingly by Judy Garland to adorable little Margaret O'Brien in the most moving scene of the whole film:
And the lesson that as long as they are together they'll be happy. Since that's what Christmas is all about, being close to the ones you love.
Now, add fuel to my festive fire: what's your favorite Christmas movie?
