goin' out west

Image
just after sunrise, bundled up and ready to go in the early morn. addie lives about 15 minutes up in the mountains, so darin drove me to her house and then she and i took off on our long drive. up highway 50 through the sierra nevadas. first stop was a weird little gas station stop called Fresh Pond, where lo and behold, we see our good friend martin! he does very dangerous work up in trees and meets his crew up there before they go climb way up into the massive pines. he is a jolly good fellow and it made my heart glad to see him as we headed up the mountain. over the summit to tahoe... and into the great nevada basin lucky for us, addie's husband artie is the greatest snack packer ever. he prepared us a cooler full of healthy road trip snacks: sliced cucumber and onions, yogurts, sliced cheddar and havarti cheese. in a separate bag we had bagels (pre-sliced by art), rosemary crackers, mandarin oranges, apples, organic pretz...

Paz para el Viaje

the night before i left for my little road trip with my sis, i gleefully dove into a beautiful little package from sweet andrea of Sitting in Booths . all the way from florida, a land i dream of for its swamps and birds and wooden rowboats. which she describes so romantically . she sent me color and vitality: thrifted handmade united farm worker cards with lovely prints, this southwestern beaded belt, the most delectable lavender lotion she made herself, which was perfect to take along to combat the dry high dessert utah climate. . and the prettiest flowy little earth-mama clothing items in all the rich russet-periwinkle colors of a utah sunset. as per usual i had a little helper. he's really just a social butterfly, doesn't like to get left out of any excitement around here. but the next morning i kissed him, and the rest of the household good-bye, and took off with addie across the dry tumbledown state of nevada. in my newly gifted andrea s...

Peace in the Valley

Image
we took a ramble today through the giant oaks of the valley by the river, on winding horsetrails that crisscross through watering springs and frog song, seed pods and pussywillow. a mile out there are some abandoned buildings, an old west movie set years ago. this crumbling little house has a shelf of books to trade (romance novels...) and tattered curtains in the windows. a bench propped between two massive stumps. a doorway facing the rising sun. looks like a good hide out to me. mice and squirrels nest here. hang your hat and stay awhile... the january sun has been palely loitering round these parts. watch out for these pricklers when you lay down to read. the days are short and sweet pink plaid overshirt: darin's, thrifted magenta plaid sundress: f21 clearance from this little excursion shorts: cut offs i made from thrifted jeans tights: from target years ago boots: my best Ariat ...
