a date with this dude...

after a week of lots of work and social engagements every single night,
saturday me and this weird wacky and wonderful hub of mine decided to opt out of everything else going on.
we absconded from town for a sacramento date.
just like the old days, took us back to the early 2000s when we'd gallivant the streets of midtown at all hours.

we hit up our favorite theater, the majestic and old fashioned Tower, where the seats are funky and old, the air is warm and sticky, the popcorn is greasy, the bathrooms are pink and everything is just right. we went to finally see the new film by one of our favorite directors, Terrence Malick. darin has been on the edge of his seat to see this one; both of us have literally been waiting for years.
it did not disappoint, oh no no no. have you seen it yet? if so, i really wish we could have a cup of coffee together and rehash it all.
please go see for yourself, o spacious hearts. the Tree of Life. (don't read the review though, just go see it first)
the two old ladies behind us just didn't get it. they were talking at full volume the whole time. some people walked out. i don't know how to explain that.

afterwards, in some kind of rhapsody, we headed across the street to the record store and the bookstore. damn straight that's our kinda date! darin was pleased to purchase a new cinephile magazine and we had the luck to run into our good friend and musical whiz kid michael working at the record store but i struck out on the new bon iver, picking it up later at the Beat instead.

rose crown!

that little corner of town sets a romantic scene, what with the fountain and roses and bicycles and sunlit 1930s theater and all. we lingered til darin got too hungry to keep taking photos.

i really love how the trees make a crazy ascending nest of my hair:

so we headed to our other undying love. zelda's pizza, with the best cornmeal crust pizza in the world.
the lighting was too dim for darin to successfully enjoy his new magazine, but hey, we figured, we'll just talk instead.

and i am very lucky because with darin, that never gets old. never. he is fascinating, good at trivia, a wizard, hilarious and fun. sometimes isn't it so nice to just grab hands and head out into the world together just the two of you? and guess what? that's what we are about to do again! we leave tomorrow morning...it is our four year anniversary and we've got another adventurous getaway up our sleeves! more about that when i return. hope you're having lovely romantic blissful days my dear ones.

summer solstice magic and music

it was like the day cast in magic light.
at the bookstore i worked with sharon, a wise woman who knows healing and herbs and energies.
sharon brought organic strawberries to share with me, and tiny silver forks to eat them with.
our friend noel came to visit with her new baby wyatt.
we got flowers from a local beekeeper gal, straight from her vigorous garden.

in the evening we went to play at lotus park down by the river with our friends.
in celebration, i opened a bottle of madrona wine, a delicious and refreshing dry riesling, that was a gift from our friend tim wright a couple years back. (i'd been saving it for the right moment!)

beauty. summer. skin. sunshine.

dogs. water. sparkle. dive. flow. grass. wine. run. wild.

the photos really speak for themselves, that feeling, oh how it kills me, flowing through me when the seasons change and making me know i am part of it all, we are all together, and every last little tiny particle glowing and hot and alive...is love.

now that it's officially summer it's time to start playing my very favorite summery cds.
(do you still use cds? i love them, especially homemade mix cds and tapes. i love records too, when they may be had.)

it's a hot night, the windows are down, your hair is going crazy and you can't stop smiling.  all you want to do is to sing along and be loud, and dance a little bit, it's beck all the way. my favorite summertime album of his is Guero. especially in "que onda guero" when somebody says, andale joto your popsicle's melting...totally reminds me of my childhood in escondido and so many other parts of my life. and when christina ricci says "please enjoy" in the song "hell yes." HELL YES!

a very old summer favorite is the welsh folksy band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. have you ever heard them? i just realized posting the link that they split up in 2006. well the best album for summer is called the Blue Trees, and the best sweetest summer song ever is "face like summer."

laura veirs' music makes me feel especially exuberant in that sunshiney way, especially her last two albums, July Flame and Saltbreakers.
a couple summers ago i used to drive to the river all by myself listening to the song "don't lose yourself" and singing along like a madwoman and feeling like a million bucks, footloose and fancy free and in love with the world.

the only other album i have to mention is the new bon iver. i'm sure you've heard it and i hope it's making you cry in the good way. i never thought of his music as summery until now, and now i can't imagine summer without it. i hope it haunts me forever, and i hope it is a sign that this will be a summer like no other.

what's your favorite summertime album?
i'm always excited to hear new heart-rendingly good music.
and happy solstice to you all! may summer proceed with gusto!

one hot sweaty summer night

it was a hot sticky summer evening. the bookstore owners were on vacation so i was working lots of hours and i'd just gotten finished with a sweaty, running-around, book-buying, book-cleaning, stacking and shelving and running errands around town kinda day.

went to visit my hub at work. i am pleased to report that there's an adorable girl kitten living at the shelter that they've tamed and named patches.
darin works at a youth shelter for runaways and at-risk kids but there were no children there that night so i brought him a dvd to watch and visited the kitties...
she looks a little like my bean.
and there goes mama scurrying off, she's shy. and they both have half-size tails!

dressed up in my summertime clothes.

a homemade flower pin from teeny, necklace made for me by my friend mallory: o lucky rosy gifts.

summertime requires skirts with pockets.
for bobbypins, sticks of gum, snippets of rosemary, a treat, a trivia card, or a cube of ice.

after that i was heading solo over to a good-bye party for my friends anthony (papa twan) and livia and baby Lian. affectionately known as the twans (if you've read my blog awhile now you might remember their wedding); they are moving back to germany, livia's home country where she has secured a fabulous teaching job. i'm happy for her mama and family, but sad for us! the shindig was bittersweet but super celebratory.

as soon as i walked up to the coz, this is the sight that greeted me:

my adorable girl kaitlyn, who i've known and loved forever and have had long lovely weepy amazing talks with over the years...secrets and long drives and letters and rambles and sheer love. anyway she has the cutest style and i just had to start snapping close ups of her outfit...those lace shorts! those LEGS!

it kept happening. next appeared the cutest queen of flounce and vintage prettiness, monique.
she has her own shop now (like a real storefront!)

best gunne ever!

chelsea's adorable dress is the surprise of the night. should i give away her secret? i had to know where she found it; the little cups over the boob section reminds me exactly of a dress i had in the early 90s.
welp, it's not from the nineties. it's from cvs! yes, the drugstore, haha!

even the boys were walkin around in their summertime clothes.

people were coming out with hot and sweaty wiggly giggly babies. loud drum music was coming from the open windows upstairs. babies were rocking the mike. dream night!

i finally headed upstairs, greeted by more summer beauties...
jocelyn, bridget and becky in bright array.

and brand new mama elsie in a cutie pie lime green thrifted darling!
i was seriously swooning over all of the free spirited summer attire.

here's the lady of the hour, miss lovely livia herself and her sweet boy lian.
i'll miss these glowing souls!
but now we have a friendly home to visit in ye olde castle country.

it was a perfect summer party, hot and musical, with flowers and bubbles and coolers of beer.

these menfolk have been playing music together for years and years and years. they were in there spontaneously creating an epic jam sesh (excuse my cheesy lingo) that generated even more intense energy and heat.

...while babies were passed around with exuberance!
placerville papas and grandpas:
mamas, aunties, friends.

we're gonna miss this kid.
but it was a perfect send off, just another friendly hot and sweaty neighborhood night!
i hope your june is glorious.

my digs:
tank top: came from my friend mary a hundred years ago
flower pin: made for me especially by teeny
necklace: made for me especially by mallory
